Overview

Healthcare raises the stakes on navigation and accessibility. People arrive at a hospital website under stress, often looking for one specific thing, sometimes using assistive technology. Consolidating a fragmented estate into one platform had to improve all of that, not just tidy the architecture.

What we did

We provided senior design direction, finalised the design system, reworked navigation and led the Drupal development.

The platform is component-driven, built on a Paragraph-based content structure rather than Layout Builder, which keeps editorial flexibility without letting page structure drift arbitrarily across a large site. Thousands of pages of legacy content were migrated with SEO preserved.

Desktop and mobile navigation were designed and then tested with real users, validated across more than 125 user tests instead of settled by opinion. We integrated crisis communication alerts and advanced search, and delivered training and documentation so internal teams could run the platform themselves.

The outcome

Built to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. A responsive mega menu on desktop with a compact mobile equivalent, both user-validated. A flexible content structure the client's own team can extend.

Content and component guides, technical documentation and staff training mean the platform is maintainable without us, which for a public-facing healthcare site matters more than the launch itself.
